Instate Basketball Matchups

Sorry for the delay in posts. Had a busy holiday season but I want to get back on track now.

We had some big instate basketball games recently. JMU pulled out a big victory in dropping VCU with a buzzer beater by Juwann James. Also UofR hosted VT and was able to pull off the victory 52-49.

Local college basketball teams struggling

The Rams and the Spiders are both struggling a bit early this season. UR is at 4-4 and VCU is at 3-3. Hopefully for all us of basketball fans this is the time to work the kinks out. Anyone have any thoughts on what is going wrong so far?

Spiders pull off a last second win!

The Richmond Spiders Men’s Basketball team evened their record to 2-2 last night in some heroics by freshman Justin Harper who hit a big 3 pointer with 1:15 left to play in overtime to give Richmond the lead over East Carolina. The Spiders held on to win the game 67-65. Read more here.

Next up for the Spiders is UMBC at home(the Robins Center) on Saturday.

In other college basketball news VCU is playing in the Puerto Rico Tip Off tomorrow night, Friday night and possibly Sunday. Those games will be on ESPNU and Sunday’s game could get shown on ESPN2.

Spiders put up a fight against Memphis

It should be an exciting year for local college basketball if the last couple days are any indication. Our UR boys fought for a tough win against Maine and then looked pretty impressive against #3 Memphis for most of last night. They were leading the game with 13 minutes to play before fab freshman Derrick Rose led Memphis on a run to take the lead and put this game away. The Spiders were led by David Gonzalvez who had 25 points and shot 4-of-7 from 3 point land. Click here for more.

College basketball starts!

UR actually plays the first Division I college basketball game of the regular season tomorrow afternoon against Maine as part of the 2k Sports College Hoops Classic benefitting Coaches vs. Cancer in Memphis, TN. If the Spiders win tomorrow then they play the winner of the UT-Martin/Memphis game. That could lead to us playing #3 Memphis on Tuesday night(on ESPNU if you have it). It could be a very good indication of how good we’ll be this year.

For those who are want a local game you can go see then come out to the Seigel Center tomorrow(Monday) night where VCU will play local(and DII powerhouse) Virginia Union in it’s final exhibition game.

VCU wins first exhibition against VSU

The Rams started slow last night but came on strong in the second half to beat Virginia State 60-47 in their first exhibition game last night. Senior Jamal Shuler led the way with 17 points, 15 of those in the second half. Click here for more.

VCU hosts Virginia Union on Monday night in their next exhibition game. That one should be fun! It’s at the Siegel Center at 7:30pm. Come on out and support local college basketball!
